Lichen caninus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1149. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae sylvis, juxta lapides, in terra, terrestris." RCN: 8217.

Lectotype (Howe in Bull. Torrey Bot. Club. 39: 201. 1912): Magnol, Herb. Linn. No. 1273.184 (LINN) .

Current name: Peltigera canina (L.) Willd. ( Peltigeraceae).

Note: Jørgensen & al. (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 115: 285. 1994) accepted Howe’s choice of lectotype but noted that the type (their f. 12) belongs to Peltigera praetextata ( Flörke ex Sommerf.) Zopf. Accordingly, they stated (pp. 286, 373) that a proposal for the conservation of the name with a conserved type (Germany, Flörke, Deutsche lieh. 153 (UPS)) was to be made by Vitikainen in 1994, also noted by the latter (in Acta Bot. Fenn. 152: 30. 1994). However, this proposal does not appear to have been published.
