Porella pinnata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1106. 1753.
"Habitat in Pensylvania." RCN: 7985.
Lectotype (Howe in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 78. 1993): [icon] " Porella pinnis obtusis" in Dillenius, Hist. Musc.: 459, t. 68, f. “Porella” . 1741. - Voucher: Herb. Dillenius (OXF) .
Generitype of Porella Linnaeus.
Current name: Porella pinnata L. ( Porellaceae).
Note: After an extensive discussion, Howe (in Bull. Toney Bot. Club 24: 518. 1897) treated the Dillenian material (OXF) associated with the cited Dillenius figure as the type of this name, followed in this by others such as Evans (in Rhodora 18: 82. 1916) and Grolle (in Feddes Repert. 87: 221. 1976). However, Linnaeus did not study Dillenius’ material and would have based his own account on Dillenius’ published description and illustration (Linnaeus wrote "Hanc neque ego vidi"). For this reason, Jarvis & al. designated the published illustration as the type, with the material as the typotype (while attributing the choice to Howe).
