Polygonum maritimum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 361. 1753.

"Habitat Monspelii, in Italia, Virginia." RCN: 2864.

Lectotype (Styles in Watsonia 5: 212. 1962): Löfling s.n., Herb. Linn. No. 510.22 (LINN) .

Current name: Polygonum maritimum L. ( Polygonaceae).

Note: Raffaelli (in Taxon 32: 115. 1983), believing incorrectly that Linnaeus received no specimens from Löfling until after 1753, rejected Styles’ choice of type in favour of a collection in Herb. Burser XVI: 35 (UPS). However, Löfling’s material almost certainly reached Linnaeus in late April 1752 ( López González, pers. comm.) and so is original material for the name.
