Potentilla acaulis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 500. 1753.
"Habitat in Sibiria." RCN: 3801.
Replaced synonym of: Potentilla subacaulis L. (1759), nom. illeg.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 655.46 (LINN); Herb. Linn. No. 655.47 (LINN) .
Current name: Potentilla acaulis L. ( Rosaceae).
Note: Although Stearn (Introd. Linnaeus’ Sp. Pl. (Ray Soc. ed.): 127. 1957) says this is "to be typified by [a] specimen … from Gmelin in the Linnaean herbarium", it is unclear which collection was intended. Both 655.46 and 655.47 (LINN) carry “22” (the number of this species account in Species Plantarum), but neither is indicated directly as coming from Gmelin, and the collections are not clearly part of a single gathering. The name, which is currently untypified, is in use for an Asiatic taxon (see Soják in Preslia 65: 129. 1993) in a taxonomically complex group of species.
