Pteris rufa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1074. 1753.
"Habitat in America septentrionaliore." RCN: 7777.
Lectotype (Proctor, Ferns Jamaica: 212. 1985): [icon] " Filix minor ruffa lanugine tota obducta, in pinnas tantum divisa, raras, non crenatas subrotundas" in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 1: 87, t. 45, f. 1. 1707. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 1: 96 (BM-SL) .
Current name: Hemionitis rufa (L.) Sw. ( Pteridaceae).
Note: Specific epithet spelled “ruffa” in the protologue.
Although Acrostichum rufum L. (1759) has been treated as a new combination based on Pteris rufa by some authors, this is unjustified as there is no direct reference to the earlier name in the protologue of A. rufum, and P. rufa also appears in the same work (1759), as noted by Tryon & Stolze (in Fieldiana, Bot. 22: 47. 1989). Linnaeus did, however, treat the two names as synonymous in 1763.
