Favonigobius Whitley, 1930

Gobius phaiospilosoma Bleeker, 1849 . The species was described with a size given of 46 mm TL from Pasuruan, Sumanap Regency, east Java Province on Madurae Strait from estuarine waters. It is unclear whether the species was described from a single specimen or multiple specimens. A possible holotype is RMNH 4456, 34 mm SL. The caudal is damaged, but total length would be expected around 40–42 mm TL. The second dorsal and anal ray counts are I,8 of the possible holotype. Bleeker recorded I,9, but probably counted the last branched ray as a separate ray. The predorsal scale count is 10, very low for a Glossogobius . The sensory papillae are arranged in multiple vertical rows on the lower cheek, characteristic of some species of Favonigobius . The tongue is rounded, and clearly the species is not a Glossogobius and assigned here as a valid species of Favonigobius . Most species of Favonigobius have few or no predorsal scales.
