SYNONYMS: antiquus Ameghino, 1889; brasiliensis Schinz, 1821; cinereoargenteus Larranaga, 1923; entrerianus Burmeister, 1861; fossilis H. Gervais and Ameghino, 1889; protalopex Lund, 1839.

COMMENTS: Placed in Pseudalopex by Berta (1988) and in Dusicyon by Cabrera (1958). Considered in Canis (Pseudalopex) by Langguth (1975) and Van Gelder (1978).
