COMMENTS: Type genus: Cryptoprocta Bennett, 1833, by monotypy (Melville and Smith, 1987). Considered a subfamily of felids by Gregory and Hellman (1939) and Beaumont (1964). There is disagreement as to the proper subfamilies for the Malagasy viverrids; see Pocock (1915a), Petter (1974), and Wozencraft (1989a, b).
