Mydaus F. G. Cuvier, 1821 . In E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and F. G. Cuvier, Hist. Nat. Mammifères, pt. 2, 3(27), "Telagon", 2 pp.

TYPE SPECIES: Mydaus meliceps F. G. Cuvier, 1821 (= Mephitis javanensis Desmarest, 1820).

SYNONYMS: Suillotaxus Lawrence, 1939 .

COMMENTS: Lawrence (1939) believed that differences in dentition and pelage warranted separation of these taxa into separate, monotypic genera (i.e., Suillotaxus marchei, Mydaus javanensis). These differences parallel those found within the genus Melogale (Long and Killingley, 1983). This genus is provisionally placed in Melinae (see comments therein), its position may be better considered as incertae sedis.
