TYPE SPECIES: " Phoca ursina " (= Phoca pusilla Schreber, 1777; not Phoca ursina Linnaeus, 1758; Allen, 1905 discussed confusion in designation of type species).

COMMENTS: Reviewed by King (1954) and Repenning et al. (1971) who included Arctophoca Peters, 1867. Van Gelder (19776) considered Zalophus and Arctocephalus congeneric.
