Prionapterus staphylinus var. Schaeferi Bosq, 1947: 293 . Syn. nov.
Galileo (1987b) synonymized P. staphilinus schaeferi Bosq, 1947 with the species of Bruch (translated): “According to the characters presented, it is assumed that the males of Cordoba and Catamarca, as pointed out by Bosq (1947) as a variety of P. staphilinus ( var. schaeferi), are in fact P. woltersi .” The holotype and a paratype, originally belonging to Bosq collection, were in the Carlos Alberto Campos Seabra collection, which was housed in the MNRJ. Galileo (1987b) did not examine the types (all males) of that species deposited in the MNRJ because, at that time, it was not allowed. Unfortunately, the entire collection of the MNRJ was destroyed in a recent fire. However, there is a third paratype male of P. staphilinus schaeferi that belonged to Bernardo Schaefer, which was not located by Galileo (1987b) or us. Fortunately, Steven W. Lingafelter took a photograph of the holotype of P. staphilinus schaeferi years ago (Fig. 54). Based on this photograph, it is possible to see that P. staphilinus schaeferi is not a synonym of P. woltersi, but just a chromatic variation of P. staphilinus Guérin-Méneville, 1831 .
