Sphecogaster biplagiatus Lacordaire, 1868 (= Sphecomorpha chalybea Newman, 1838)
(Figures 22–25)
Sphecomorpha chalybea Newman, 1838: 397; Monné, 2018a: 758 (cat.).
Sphecogaster biplagiatus Lacordaire, 1868: 472 . Monné, 2018a: 758 (cat.; in syn.). Syn. nov.
According to Lacordaire (1868) (translated): “It [ Sphecogaster] includes only a large and beautiful species of Suriname, which has been communicated to me by Mr. C. A. Dohrn.” Bates (1870), suggested the synonymy between Sphecogaster and Sphecomorpha, and between Sphecogaster biplagiatus and Sphecomorpha chalybea: “Lacordaire appears entirely to have overlooked Newman’s genus. I am inclined to think the species he describes is the same as Newman’s.” Evidently, “I am inclined to think” cannot be considered a formal synonymy. However, the synonymy indicated by Bates (1870) is correct. Accordingly, S. biplagiatus is here formally synonymized with S. chalybea .
Monné (2018a) and Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2018) reported the holotype in the CMSP collection. However, it is in the ZMPA collection.
