Apparently not common; only one large colony 10 cm in diameter was collected during the three week survey. Morphology exactly as described by Lambert (1989). Tunic usually a pale lavender, though may be darker in areas with more dense purple pigment in the tunic. Colony encrusting, thickly irregular in shape. Known only from British Columbia and Washington (Lambert 1989; Lamb & Hanby 2005).
