Sponia glomerata Hochst. in Krauss (1845: 87).
Synonym:— Celtis glomerata in sched., nom. nud.
Type: — AFRICA. South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, “In sylvis primitivis terrae Natalensis”, Octubre 1839, C.F.F. Krauss 354 [K: First-step lectotype, designated by Polhill in Kew Bull. 19(1): 143 (1964), as ‘isotype’. Second-step lectotype designated here, K barcode 000243075!; isolectotypes B†, K barcode 000243074!, MO barcode 013773!, MO barcode 204190!, TUB barcode 000005!, TUB barcode 000006!, TUB barcode 000007!).
Nomenclatural notes: —When describing Sponia glomerata, Hochstetter (1845) cited C.F.F. Krauss 354, but did not specify the herbarium of deposit. Pohlhill (1964) reported that the isotype is deposited in K. Wilmot-Dear (1999) cited that the holotype of C. glomerata was deposited in B. When we queried the database of B, no specimen was located. According to the Tropicos database (2023) the specimen from B was destroyed. Even if the specimen of B was still preserved, it could not be recognized as a holotype, because Hochstetter (1845) did not specify the holotype. Based on this scenario, we designate the specimen at Herb. K with barcode 000243074 as lectotype (ICN Art. 9.3), because this specimen has more leaves and flowers compared to the other specimens of K.
Taxonomic notes: —Synonym of Sponia guineensis Planchon (1873: 197) (Sattarian et al. 2006).
