Genus Stauropoctonus Brauns, 1889

Stauropoctonus Brauns, 1889: 75 .

Type species: Ophion bombycivorus Gravenhorst, by monotypy.

Diagnosis. Stauropoctonus is moderately to very large sized wasps and can be distinguished from other ophionine genera by combination of following characters: (1) Mandible more or less strongly taped and twisted; (2) Ocelli very large (i.e. posterior ocellus touching or close to eye); (3) Occipital carina virtually always absent; (4) Mesopleural furrow strong; (5) Discosubmaginal cell of fore wing without sclerites; (6) Fore tibial spur without a trace of membranous flange behind macrotrichial comb, and (7) distal margin of mid and hind trochantelli produced into a long curved acute tooth. Among these characters, (3) and (7) are rather rare within the Ophioninae . See Shimizu & Lima (2017) for detailed description and diagnosis.
