Asianthrips magnus sp. n.
(Figs 11–12, 80–87)
Female macroptera. Body brown (Fig. 11). Antennal segment III yellow, distal half shaded with pale brown; remaining segments uniformly brown. All femora brown, concolourous with body, with extreme apices yellowish; all tibiae and tarsi yellow. Fore wings very weakly shaded with brown at basal half. Body setae almost colourless. Head (Fig. 80) longer than wide, 1.16 times as long as wide in holotype; dorsal surface sculptured with transverse reticulation, but the reticles very weak or almost smooth between eyes; ocellar region weakly protruded to a cone at an acute angle. Cheeks very weakly rounded, weakly narrowed to base. Postocular setae almost as long as eyes. Postocellar setae weakly developed, shorter than a diameter of posterior ocellus. Eyes well developed, 0.37 times as long as head in holotype. Antennal segments VII and VIII somewhat broadly fused, but VIII not constricted basally, cone-shaped (Fig. 82); segment III with three sense cones. Maxillary stylets retracted into 2/5 of head capsule, but not reaching postocular setae, rather wide apart, a little wider than 1/3 of the head width apart at the basal collar of head. Pronotum 0.53 times as long as head and 2.17 times as wide as long in holotype; pa about 2/3 the median pronotal length. Metanotum (Fig. 83) polygonally reticulated anteriorly, longitudinally reticulated posteriorly, but very weak. Prospinasternum largely developed. Mesopresternum and mesoeusternum (Fig. 85) narrowly fused medially, with long sutures between them at both sides; mesopresternum eroded medially. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 6–8 duplicated cilia in holotype. Pelta irregular trapezoid (Fig. 86), very weakly reticulated. Tergites not small, tergites III – V much wider than pronotum. S1 setae on tergite IX a little longer than S2, about 2/3 the length of tube, S1 weakly expanded, S2 very blunt or nearly pointed at apex. Tube (Fig. 87) about 0.6 times as long as head. Anal setae a little shorter than tube .
Measurements. Female holotype (mac.) in microns. Distended body length about 2000. Head length 189, width across cheeks 163. Compound eye dorsal length about 70. Pronotum length 100, width 217. Fore wing length about 860. Tube length 117, width across base 56. Antenna length about 400, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 60 (30), 63 (30), 55 (26), 53 (23), 48 (20), 32 (13). Postocular setae 68–72. Pronotal aa 50–53, am 47–48, ml 57–58, pa 65–68, epim about 70. S1 setae on tergite IX 78–79, S2 setae on tergite IX 66–73. Anal setae about 100.
Female microptera. Colour very similar to macropterous female (Fig. 12), but anterior portion of head somewhat yellowish. Eyes small (Fig. 81), 0.30–0.32 times as long as head. Maxillary stylets retracted into 1/2 of head capsule, almost reaching postocular setae. Pronotum 0.64–0.66 times as long as head. Posterior half of metanotum almost smooth (Fig. 84). Pelta (Fig. 84) much wider than long. Sigmoid wing retaining setae absent. Anal setae almost as long as tube.
Measurements. Female paratype (mic.) in microns. Distended body length about 1900. Head length 175, width across cheeks 158. Compound eye dorsal length 53–55. Pronotum length 112, width 237. Fore wing length?. Tube length 108, width across base 59. Antenna length about 390, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 57 (28), 63 (30), 52 (26), 51 (25), 45 (20), 32 (13). Postocular setae 75–76. Pronotal aa 41–42, am 43–43, ml 57–73, pa 62–67, epim 63–70. S1 setae on tergite IX 80–85, S2 setae on tergite IX 65–75. Anal setae 112–113.
Type series. Holotype female (mac.): Indonesia, South Sulawesi (= Celebes), 11km E from Malino, alt. about 1500m, on dead branches, 2.viii.1984 (SO) . Paratypes: Indonesia, 4 females (mic.), collected with holotype .
Remarks. A. magnus is unique in having the head with very weak sculpture between the eyes, and the ocellar region that is weakly protruded at an acute angle as a cone (Figs 80 & 81).
