Asianthrips borneoensis sp. n.

(Figs 5, 48–54)

Female macroptera. Body brown (Fig. 5). Antennal segment III yellow, weakly shaded with brown, remaining segments uniformly brown. All femora brown, concolourous with body, with extreme apices yellowish; fore and mid tibiae pale brown to brown, with bases and apices yellow, hind tibiae yellow, shaded with pale brown at middle; all tarsi yellow. Fore wings and body setae almost colourless. Head (Fig. 48) almost as long as wide; dorsal surface generally sculptured with transverse reticulation. Cheeks very weakly rounded, weakly narrowed to base. Postocular setae much longer than eyes. Postocellar setae longer than a diameter of posterior ocellus. Eyes about 0.4 times as long as head. Antennal segments VII and VIII somewhat broadly fused, segment VIII almost cone-shaped (Fig. 49); segment III with two sense cones. Maxillary stylets retracted into head capsule, but not reaching postocular setae, rather wide apart, wider than 1/3 of the head width apart at the basal collar of head. Pronotum (Fig. 48) 0.67 times as long as head and 1.95 times as wide as long; pa about 2/3 of the median pronotal length. Metanotum (Fig. 50) polygonally reticulated anteriorly, longitudinally reticulated posteriorly. Prospinasternum rather small. Mesopresternum and mesoeusternum comparatively narrowly fused medially (Fig, 51), with rather long sutures between them at both sides. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 4–5 duplicated cilia. Tergites comparatively small (Fig. 53), especially tergites III–V somewhat narrow, tergites IV and V almost as wide as pronotum. S1 setae on tergite IX a little longer than S2, 0.86–0.89 times as long as tube, S1 weakly expanded, S2 nearly pointed at apex. Tube 0.63 times as long as head. Anal setae almost as long as tube (Fig. 54).

Measurements. Female holotype in microns. Distended body length 1650. Head length 150, width across cheeks 152. Compound eye dorsal length 59. Pronotum length 100, width 195. Fore wing length about 710. Tube length 95, width across base 50. Antenna length about 340, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 49 (25), 53 (25), 46 (23), 43 (22), 37 (22), 30 (15). Postocular setae 82–85. Pronotal aa about 50, am 44–45, ml 59–63, pa 67–68, epim 63–65. S1 setae on tergite IX 82–85, S2 setae on tergite IX about 80. Anal setae about 100.

Type series. Holotype female (mac.): Borneo, Sabah, about 3km N from Kundasang, on dead leaves and branches, 6.ix.1990 (TN & SO).

Remarks. The unique holotype female of A. borneoensis was collected together with three paratype females of A. dasycornis, newly described below. The antennal segment III of this species has only two sense cones, and this character state is shared with A. vietnamensis, newly described below. A. vietnamensis, however, has rather slender antennal segment VIII which is distinctly constricted at base and narrowly fused to the segment VII.
