Material.
1 specimen (SMF PO 101.123); Miya River at Numa, Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, Takakura FM, level MS 36, late Burdigalian, diatom zone 3A-3B .
Discussion.
A single otolith from the Takakura Formation differs from the much more common L. lenticularis described above in the shallower, depressed dorsal rim; the much smaller caudal colliculum expressed in the ratio OCL:CCL of 2.35; and a nearly completely flat inner face. The OL:OH (1.1) and OCL:CCL (2.35) ratios are well within the range of diversity observed in the type specimens from the early Miocene of New Zealand (OL:OH = 1.1-1.25; OCL:CCL = 2.0-2.5). The species has recently also been identified from the Burdigalian of Chile (Schwarzhans and Nielsen 2021) and thus, although generally uncommon, appears to represent another myctophid species with an antitropical distribution pattern in the early to middle Miocene of the Pacific Ocean.
