Eriocephalus africanus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 926. 1753.

"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 6702.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 365.15 (S); [icon] in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 1: 132, t. 110, f. 134. 1732; [icon] in Walther, Design. Pl.: 1, t. 1. 1735.

Generitype of Eriocephalus Linnaeus.

Current name: Eriocephalus africanus L. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Levyns (in J. S. African Bot. 7: 135. 1941) suggested that Linnaeus’ plant was likely to be the one then known as E. umbellulatus Cass., adding "There is a type specimen of E. africanus in the Linnaean herbarium so that at some future date it will be possible to verify this assumption". However, the material she presumably intended (1040.1, LINN) lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. “1”), is a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. Müller & al. (in Germishuizen, Fl. Southern Africa 33(4:1): 23. 2001) treated the Dillenius plate as one of two iconotypes (the other being the ineligible (post-1753) Hill t. 79). However, no explicit type choice was made.
