Type Locality: Madagascar, Fianarantsoa Prov., Ambohimitambo forest, 4500 ft (1372 m).

Vernacular Names: Major's Tufted-tailed Rat.

Distribution: Middle to upper montane forest, 1000-2000 m, E Madagascar, from Montagne d’Ambre in the north to the Anosyenne Mountains in the south.

Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.

Discussion: Morphologically similar to and presumably closely related with E. penicillatus (Carleton, 1994) .
