Type Locality: Madagascar, Fianarantsoa Prov., 6 hours SE Fandriana, Ampitambe forest.

Vernacular Names: Greater Short-tailed Rat.

Distribution: Isolated records, ca. 900-1990 m, in highlands of N and C Madagascar.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Extent poorly documented, but recent records paint a broader distribution in the Central Highlands (Soarimalala et al., 2001) as well as its presumably isolated occurrence in the Northern Highlands (Jansa and Carleton, 2003 b).
