Type Locality: Madagascar, Antsiranana Prov., Reserve Speciale d’Anjanaharibe-Sud, 11 km WSW Befingitra, 1550 m; 14º44.5′S, 49º27.5′E.

Vernacular Names: Grandidier's Tufted-tailed Rat.

Distribution: Middle to upper montane forest, 1250-1875 m, in the Northern Highlands and northern portion of the Central Highlands, E Madagascar.

Discussion: Certain morphological features suggest that the species is most closely related to E. petteri .
