Type Locality: Madagascar, Toliara Prov., Tsilambana.
Vernacular Names: Western Tufted-tailed Rat.
Distribution: Dry deciduous forest and xerophilous habitats, W Madagascar, from the vicinity of Ankarafantsika to the island’s southernmost tip (Carleton et al., 2001:Fig. 3).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Although endemic to western biotopes, the range of E. myoxinus closely approaches that of eastern species in the extreme south (Carleton et al., 2001; Goodman et al., 1999). Sister species of E. minor according to phylogenetic interpretation of mitochondrial DNA sequences (Jansa et al., 1999).
