Discussion: Subgenus Aporodon, mexicanus species group. In the allozymic study of Arellano et al. (2003), samples of R. gracilis emerged as paraphyletic with regard to R. spectabilis on Cozumel Isl; their results identify the need for critical review of the gracilis spectabilis complex. See Young and Jones (1984, Mammalian Species, 218).
