Type Locality: Chile, Magallanes Prov., Straits of Magellan, Port Famine.

Vernacular Names: Patagonian Colilargo.

Distribution: S Patagonian region of Chile and Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Karyotypic, morphometric, and phallic differentiation from O. longicaudatus supports the specific recognition of O. magellanicus (Gallardo and Palma, 1990; Gallardo and Patterson, 1985).
