Type Locality: S Turkmenistan, Kopet Dag Mtns, Chuli, near Ashkhabad.
Vernacular Names: Paradox Vole.
Distribution: Kopet Dag Mtns, S Turkmenistan, and mountains of NE Iran in N Khorassan Prov. (near Dasht, Gowadoh, Dergematie, Kaur, and Gorgan; series in AMNH and USNM; Kryštufek and Kefelioğlu, 2002); may also occur in N Afghanistan, identified as M. guentheri (Hassinger, 1973), but the two cited specimens need to be reexamined.
