Type Locality: West Indes, Lesser Antilles, Martinique.

Vernacular Names: Desmarest's Pilorie.

Synonyms: Megalomys pilorides (Desmarest 1826); Megalomys piloris (Major 1901) .

Distribution: Known only from Martinique.

Conservation: IUCN – Extinct.

Discussion: As compared with M. luciae (BMNH 53.12.16.2, the holotype), the cranium of M. desmarestii (BMNH 50.11.30.6, 55.12.24.201) is generally larger in all dimensions, its m3 larger relative to m2, and the upper incisors yellowish-orange instead of plain orange.
