Macrostomus paraiba Rafael & Cumming, 2015: 115 (description, species-group).

Diagnosis. Predominantly light brown to black specimens (Fig. 22). Head (Figs 23, 24) with frons and face shiny black. Thorax with 4 dorsocentral setae. Wing (Fig. 25) almost hyaline, except distal 1 / 5 of cell r 2+3, including distal pterostigma and ¼ of cell r 4+5, brown. Tergite 8 with rectangular sinuosities distally and basally (Fig. 27); sternite 8 with deep V-shaped sinus in basal margin (Fig. 28). Male terminalia (Figs 26–36), with posterior cercus vertically elongated, with basal projection with stout, long setae and pair of thin, elongated subdistal projections (Figs 29, 31, 32). Hypandrium with subdistal protuberance in posterior margin and apex with a pair of slightly sclerotized and outwardly curved projections in posterior view (Figs 35, 36). Female with pennate setae dorsally and ventrally on the hind tibia (Fig. 37). Female terminalia (Figs 38–41) brown to black, tergite and sternite 8 almost same, with a pair of lateromedian depressions on sternite 8. Genital fork (Fig. 41) subtriangular, small, without lateral arms; membranous genital chamber with a pair of sclerotinized spots.

Variation. Male (n=6): body length 3.0– 3.7 mm, wing length 2.6–2.9 mm. Specimens light brown; legs slightly more whitish or light yellow. Thorax with 3–4 dorsocentral setae.

Geographical records. BRAZIL (Maranhão (new record), Paraíba).

Seasonal record. From December to April.

Bionomic. Atlantic Forest and Amazon Biome (new record).

Remarks. This is the only species that has previously been recorded for the Brazilian Northeast, in the Atlantic Forest. Macrostomus paraiba Rafael & Cumming was collected in Cândido Mendes (December to April) and Centro Novo do Maranhão (March to April).
