Vellozia virgata View in CoL as a synonym of V. sellowii , and the new species V. linearis
Vellozia sellowii Seubert (1847: 75) View in CoL ( Fig. 3A, B View FIGURE 3 ). Type: — BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Caeté. Serra da Piedade, December 1836 (fl. & fr.), Sellow 1316. (holotype, B [B100243285, B100243286]!; isotype, K [000400741, K000400743]!). Syn.: Vellozia virgata Goethart & Henrard View in CoL in Henrard (1937: 382). Type: — BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Tiradentes, Serra de São José d’El
Rei, 28 January 1889 (fr.), Glaziou 17832a (holotype, L [L0041330]!), syn. nov.
Notes: — Vellozia virgata was based on a Glaziou’s collection deposited at L (Glaziou 17832a) that corresponds to V. sellowii , a much older name. The isotypes and some paratypes, although, belong to a rather different yet not described species. For solving this situation, the sinking of V. virgata into V. sellowii , and a new species, V. linearis , based on one of the paratypes of V. virgata , are here presented. The name V. virgata has been only sporadically used, mainly in revisions ( Smith 1962, Smith & Ayensu 1976) and seldom in comparative studies (e.g. Ayensu 1974). Perhaps constituting another example of problems concerning Glaziou’s collections ( Wurdack 1970, Amorim 2003, Lobão & Mello-Silva 2007, Groppo & Pirani 2008), V. sellowii (as V. virgata ) has never again been found neither at Serra de São José, in Tiradentes, nor in the contiguous Serra do Lenheiro, in São João del Rei.
