Distribution. ECS, SCS, Beibu Gulf; from Persian Gulf to China seas.
Remarks. Hedley (1922) gave Pleurotoma tuberculata Gray, 1839 (non Pleurotoma tuberculata Pusch, 1836 ) a new name Inquisitor spurious . Powell (1969) reported that the nominal subspecies Turricula nelliae nelliae was known only from the holotype, and mentioned that “the finding of further topotypic material of nelliae may even alter the status of nelliae to that of a full species”. Given the key to the nelliae subspecies Powell (1969) provided, T. nelliae spurius can be separated from T. nelliae nelliae by the flexed anterior canal and fewer basal spiral with strong gemmae. Our specimens exactly agree with the descriptions and figures of T. nelliae spurius given by Powell (1969).
Turricula nelliae spurius is commonly found in the East and South China seas. Previously reported from the SCS by Ma (2004).
