Revised description. Medium sized, slender conical shell of up to 13 teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~20°.

Protoconch high, of 3.75 smooth, convex whorls. Early teleoconch whorls conical, slightly convex with prominent, close set axial ribs. Subsutural band prominent with moderately delimited beads. Later whorls subcylindrical, flat sided to weakly convex, forming weakly gradate spire. Prominent subsutural band bearing moderately delimited subquadratic tubercles. Spiral groove distinctly incised, occasionally forming punctations. Axial ribs prominent, broad, slightly trigonal, separated by wide interspaces. Delicate spiral threads may occur between axial ribs. Last whorl moderately high, ~30% of total height. subcylindrical or weakly convex with rounded basal angulation. Fasciole prominent, broad, adapically delimited by prominent carina.Aperture moderately narrow.Columella weakly twisted, excavated in adapical half. Columellar callus thin, indistinct. No columellar fold. Anal canal indistinctly incised. Outer lip narrow; basal lip moderately wide. Siphonal canal twisted, relatively short, moderately narrow.

Discussion. Strioterebrum borianum has been confused with Strioterebrum basterotii ( Nyst, 1845) by most authors and both species are indeed very similar. Strioterebrum basterotii differs from S. borianum in its broader conical outline, less gradate spire and longer siphonal canal (see A.W. Janssen 1984: pl. 13, fig. 8, pl. 77, figs 1–2 and Wienrich 2006: pl. 116, fig. 6, pl. 156, figs 1–3 for S. basterotii from the Middle Miocene of the North Sea Basin). The protoconch of both species is identical and does not allow a separation [note that Wienrich (2006) described the protoconch of Strioterebrum basterotii to consist of 4.5 to 5 whorls, but he seems to have counted the whorls differently]. Strioterebrum borianum was also mixed with specimens of Strioterebrum volhynianum (d’Orbigny, 1852) in the collection of the NHMW. Strioterebrum volhynianum differs in its higher spire and more prominent spiral sculpture.

Paleoenvironment. The occurrence at Gainfarn and Steinebrunn ( Austria) suggests coastal, inner neritic settings with sea grass ( Zuschin et al. 2007).
