Stichopogon nartshukae Lehr, 1975: 437 .

Small dark flies, 3.5– 5 mm. The species is recognized by their overall dark, or black appearance. The bright silvery/white facial and parafacial tomentum contrasts sharply against the surrounding black hair and bristles. Legs and antenna completely black.

Adult. Male.

Head: Face silver/white tomentose, vertex black with light gray pollen, occiput black with brown pollen. Mystax hair black. Sparse black parafacial hair. Abundant white ventral occipital hair merging into medial black and dorsal postocular yellow bristles. A distinct strip of gray tomentum parallels posterior eye margin. Antenna black with sparse gray pollen. Pedicel (segment 2) with weak yellow hair. Relative lengths of segments: 3>F2+3>2>1. Thorax: Scutum black with light gray pollen. All bristles black. Dorsocentral black hair not different from surrounding acrostical hair; sparse long posteriors. Chaetotaxy with 2 presutural, 2–3 supraalar, and 2 strong postalar bristles. Scutellum black with brown pollen, margin thickened, disc ringed with long black hair. Pleura black with brown tomentum. A row of strong black katatergal bristles. Posterior margin of anepimeron with sparse weak black bristles. Legs: Black with sparse, light gray pollen, white hair and yellow bristles. Hind tibia with ventral brown hair and black bristles. Fore and mid tarsi with yellow bristles; hind tarsus with black bristles. Wings: Veins tinged brown. Halter black. Cell m3 with a short stalk. Abdomen: Male. Sternites black with black hair. Male genitalia ( Figs 23 View FIGURES 19 – 24. 19 , 29 & 30 View FIGURES 25 – 30. 25 ). Dorsal epandrium black with white hair. Gonostylus with prominent long bristles.

MAP 1. Map of South Korea showing collecting areas for Stichopogoninae .

Female. Tergites 2–4 with black triangular wedged shaped spots lined with light gray pollen. Tergite 8 light gray pollinose. Female genitalia ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 19 – 24. 19 ): Subgenital plate dark brown/black, tuft of hair on plate wide, yellow/gold, prominent, apices curved medially.

Material examined. Kangwon Province. 4 ɗ, 11 Ψ: 18/V/2006, Nam–myon, Hongch’on R. (West), 37°42’84N, 127°35’73”E. 1 ɗ, 4 Ψ: Same data except: 24/VI/2006.

Field notes. Stichopogon nartshukae was collected on the sandy shores of the Hongch’on River along fresh water inlets where the current and air movement was slower than the surrounding, larger river. The asilid is sympatric with Lasiopogon terneicus and Stichopogon inaequalis as well as overlapping flight periods with both. See Table 1 for prey and seasonality.
