Sphyrnidae (Hammerhead sharks)

The winghead shark Eusphyra blochii ( Cuvier, 1816) has been reported from the Gulf but without evidence ( Randall 1986; Carpenter et al. 1997a), although its occurrence in the Gulf of Oman near Jask is proven ( Blegvad 1944, as Zygaena blochii ). Reports of the smooth hammerhead shark Sphyrna zygaena ( Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf were doubted by Randall (1996), and our data support this, although a number of specimens of this species have recently been confirmed from Oman ( Henderson & Reeve 2011).
