Sonerila scapigera Hooker (1848: 672)

Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. Maharashtra: Mumbai district, Bombay Ghats, s.d., Dalzell s.n. (barcode K000867659 [image!]; isolectotype: barcode K000867658 [image!]). Fig. 2 .

Nomenclatural notes:— Sonerila scapigera was described and illustrated by Hooker (1848) based on the specimens collected by Dalzell from “the Ghats, near Bombay ”. However, some sources (Clarke 1879; The Plant List 2013, Tropicos 2018) mention Dalzell as the author while in others ( Cooke 1903; IPNI 2018) Hooker as the author. In the protologue Hooker gave the title “figure and description of a new Sonerila from Bombay; discovered by N.A. Dalzell” and in the text noted “our present object is to figure and describe a new species lately received with many other interesting plants from Bombay and which, as far as we can ascertain, is unique in having no stem; hence we name it S. scapigera n. sp. ” From this it is obvious that Dalzell was the collector and that he sent the material to W.J. Hooker, who provided the description of this species. There are two sheets at K (barcodes K000867658!, K000867659!) and the sheet K000867659, perfectly matching with the illustration and protologue, is designated as the lectotype.
