11. Smithia salsuginea Hance (1869: 164) .
Type citation: — “ Hongkong, sociis Smithia conferta, Sm. , et, Geissaspide cristata , W et A., mense Octrobi 1868, detexit oculatissimus Sampson. (Exsicc. n. 15113).”
Holotype: — CHINA. Hong Kong , Oct. 1868, Sampson 15113 ( BM000958971 !).
Smithia dichotoma Dalzell ex Baker (1876: 150) .
Type citation: — “ S. blanda, Hohen. Plant. Ind. Or. Exsic. No. 146, non Wall. WESTERN PENINSULA.”
Lectotype (designated here): — INDIA. Karnataka, Mangalor (Mangaluru), s.d., R. F. Hohenacker 146 ( P02913887 !); isolectotypes ( E00301234 !, M0233758 !, M0233759 !, P02913888 ! and S13-12437 !).
Distribution: — China, Myanmar and India (Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu).
Notes: — Smithia salsuginea was described by Hance (1869) based on the herbarium specimen of Sampson 15113 from Hong Kong, but did not provide the name of herbarium where specimen housed. Hance’s types are known to exist at BM and the herbarium specimen of Sampson 15113 from Hong Kong is extant at BM (BM000958971), which is therefore the obligatory holotype.
Baker (1876) described Smithia dichotoma based on the gathering of R.F. Hohenacker 146 from India, but no specific herbarium sheet was designated as holotype. Six herbarium specimens of R.F. Hohenacker 1182 from India were traced (E00301234, M0233758, M0233759, P02913887, P02913888 and S13-12437). No original materials are found at K and WELT, where Baker’s type specimens exist. Of these, the best one and better preserved sheet with complete plant specimens in having roots, stems, leaves and flowers, P02913887, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
