12. Sesleria sillingeri Deyl (1946: 117) View in CoL
≡ Sesleria insularis subsp. sillingeri ( Deyl 1946: 117) Deyl 1978: 364 View in CoL
Lectotype (designated here):— BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA. Herzegovina : Prenj planina [Mts. Prenj]. In pratis subalpinis montis Malý Prenj, 1700–1800 m, 11 July 1933, Sillinger & Deyl s.n. (PR-830096!) ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ).
Other original material (syntypes):— BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA. [Neretva]: Prenj planina: in graminosis subalpinis (Festucetum pungentis) m. Malý Prenj, 1750–1800 m, 11 July 1933, Sillinger & Deyl s.n. (PR-830097, PR-830098). [Sarajevo]: in saxosis calc. mtis Treskavica, ca 1850 m, July 1888, Beck 148b (PR-830099).
Protologue information:— Bosna. Malý Prenj , 1800 m, 1933, leg. Sillinger & Deyl ; Treskavica planina, 1871, Blau, O. No. 2272 ; 1888 Beck; 1897 Fiala; Veliko Jezero , 1500 m, 1888, Fiala ; sub. mt. Oblik 1660 m, 1929, Malý ; Bjelašnica planina: Ballif Kar, ca. 1750, 1913, Malý ; sub. cacumen mt. Bjelašnica , 1919, Malý ; Treskovac in Zelengora , 1830 m, 16 Jun 1902, Reiser ; Stog in Zelengora , 14 Jun 1906, Reiser .
Nomenclature:— The specimen selected here as lectotype has two labels: the first one does not include an identification of the collected material but does include the collecting details, together with a later-added but undated revising label (the second label) by Deyl identifying the specimen as S. robusta . We assume the revising label was added after describing S. sillingeri in his monograph ( Deyl 1946) but before 1978, because in the treatment of the genus Sesleria prepared for Flora Europaea, Deyl (1978) changed the status of S. sillingeri , considering it as a subspecies of S. insularis — S. insularis subsp. sillingeri , and not a synonym of S. robusta or S. nitid a as we could expect based on his revising labels on the specimens belonging to original material of S. silligneri (specimens deposited in PR, cited under “Other original material”). Morphologically, all the original material corresponds to S. robusta (N. Kuzmanović, pers. obs.). It is surprising that Deyl (1978: 364) decided to treat S. sillingeri as an infraspecific taxon of S. insularis .
Taxonomy:— Our recent field investigations on Mts. Prenj (Lakušić & Kuzmanović, pers. obs. 2016) confirm Deyl’s earlier opinion considering the plants growing there as belonging to S. robusta . In the latest databases and checklists, following Deyl’s treatment (1978), S. sillingeri is cited in synonymy of S. insularis (Clayton et al. 2016) or S. insularis subsp. sillingeri ( Valdés & Scholz 2009) .
