TYPE MATERIAL. — Holotype (lv) MNHN 20625 About MNHN and 7 paratypes (lv and dd) MNHN 20626 About MNHN , 1 paratype (dd) MMM, 1 paratype (dd) NMNZ.
TYPE LOCALITY. — Southern New Caledonia, 22°05’S, 167°45’E, 680-700 m [BIOCAL: stn DW 51] GoogleMaps .
MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Southern New Caledonia. BIOCAL: stn DW 33, 23°10’S, 167°10’E, 675-680 m, 1 dd; stn DW 51, 23°05’S, 167°45’E, 680-700 m, 4 lv (holotype, Fig. 49 and 3 paratypes MNHN), 6 dd (4 paratypes MNHN, 1 MMM, 1 NMNZ) GoogleMaps .
DISTRIBUTION. — Southern New Caledonia, live in 680-700 m, shells in 675-700 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell moderately slender, suboval, solid, subtranslucent. Protoconch paucispiral, large, low, smooth. Spire short, blunt, whorls weakly convex. Aperture moderately open, very oblique, widening noticeably anteriorly. Base rather tapering. Outer lip sinuous, thickened for most of its length, weakly narrowing anteriorly, central and upper parts noticeably reflected. Shoulder protruding, rounded, outer edge centrally depressed, outer margin thick, wide, flat, strongly stepped and protruding, inner edge bearing 14 tiny denticles, quite indistinct, more widely spaced and slightly more prominent along its moderately excavated anterior part than higher up. Four thin columellar plaits, 2 anterior ones oblique, weakly sinuous, 2 posterior ones less oblique, decreasing in size posteriorly.
Ground colour pale golden opalescent, apex whitish, outer margin intense white.
Dimensions: 7.10 x 3.90 mm.
Radula from 1 specimen (Fig. 59): uniserial, 18 plates around 69 Μm in width, bearing 38-42 subequal, slender, acute cusps.
REMARKS. — The shell morphology of Serrata sinuosa seems to be slightly variable. The shell of S. sinuosa is easily distinguished from that of S. veneria by its larger size, its blunter spire, the protruding shoulder of the outer lip, and its more sinuous outer lip with more numerous denticles, which become more widely spaced over the anterior part than higher up, rather than becoming fewer and more widely spaced over the posterior part as in S. veneria . The ground colour of the shell and the pattern of the columellar plaits are similar in both species.
ETYMOLOGY. — Latin sinuosus (adj., winding), referring to the twisting shape of the outer lip.
