Type material. Lectotype — MNHN G2100 ( Jung 1974). The type measures 33.7 mm in length, with a width of 13.9 mm ( Jung 1974).
Type locality. Croce Grande , San Giovanni Ilarione, Italy [Lutetian] .
Diagnosis. The shell is slender with variably wide axial swellings that are parallel to the undulating growth lines. The aperture is smooth with an unmargined labrum, and labium with an obsolete columella.
Distribution. OLIGOCENE— France Gaas, Aquitaine Basin ( Jung 1974). EOCENE—Lutetian— Italy Croce Grande near San Giovanni Ilarione ( de Gregorio 1880; Jung 1974). Yugoslavia ( Jung 1974).
Remarks. Seraphs pliciferus is the only species of Seraphs with axial sculpture on the body whorl. This sculpture is highly variable, and a number of names have been applied to the variations in sculpture. The distinctive sculpture of this species may, in later revisions, lead to it being placed in its own genus and these forms recognised as distinctive species.
