Concluding remarks

The critical revision of the original sources for the names often highlighted the need to change the traditional authorship and place of publication of some scientific names, as documented in online databases (e.g., Euro+Med 2006 onwards, IPNI 2012 onwards, The Plant List 2013 onwards).

Concerning the Italian administrative regions involved in the taxa descriptions, based on the localities cited in the protologue, Sicily, Piedmont, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia , Veneto, Tuscany, Liguria, and Campania host the highest number of type localities (262, 145, 91, 84, 74, 67, 65, and 50, respectively). This result is quite different from the pattern evidenced for the Italian endemics, with the exception of Sicily ( Peruzzi et al. 2015a). The reason for this difference is possibly that the regions at the borders of Italy (Piedmont, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia , Veneto, Liguria) share many stenochorous species with the sourrounding countries, so that they were underestimated in the previous contribution. The high number of taxa described from Tuscany, Sicily, and Campania may be due to the intense activity of botanists who worked in these regions. To complete this picture, 400 taxa were described for larger territories that embrace Italy and other countries ( EST) .

Regarding nomenclatural types, 63 taxa have a holotype, most of them being correctly described after 1 January 1958 (Art. 40.1 of the ICN). For 602 basionyms a lecto- or neo-typification is available in literature or was designated here, while for 561 names a nomenclatural type is still lacking. Intensive work in the next years will be necessary to fill these gaps in typification of the names .

Peruzzi et al. (2015) listed 1,325 endemic taxa described from Italy, of which 18 are currently considered as heterotypic synonyms of other taxa, and 15 were later recognised as non-endemic (Appendix). Furthermore, by considering that 97 Italian endemics have been recently described and/or re-evaluated, currently the inventory includes 1,389 taxa. These names are listed in the online, continuously updated, list of Italian endemics (https://goo.gl/vr7EGU, linked to Peruzzi et al. 2014, 2015). By adding to these Italian endemics the 1,227 (+ 15, see Appendix) native, non-endemic taxa treated in this study, the general picture of the currently accepted taxa of vascular plants described from Italy amounts to 2,631, i.e. about 32% of the 8,195 native species and subspecies currently recorded for Italy (Bartolucci et al. 2018).
