Diagnosis (after Krömmelbein 1962, somewhat altered): lateral outline of the valves kidney-shaped. Dorsal margin runs fairly straight in the centre, rising slightly towards the posterior, as a consequence the maximum carapace height lies far towards the posterior. The anterior margin is drawn out downwards towards the front in a characteristic way, and the anterior part of the ventral margin curves inwards strongly. Carapace outline in dorsal view biconvex with rather flattened flanks, very rarely strongly bulged at the posterior.
