Type locality. Not stated (“Habitat in Austria Dom. Schiffermüller”)

Material examined. None

Identity. Acleris sparsana ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) .

Remarks. There is no evidence that Fabricius intended to describe a new taxon as he clearly refers to Denis and Schiffermüller’s publication of Tortrix sparsana . This is clearly a case of subsequent misspelling. It may be found, however, incorrectly listed as an available name in several accounts (e.g., Obraztsov 1956; Razowski 1984; Brown 2005).
