Type material: Holotype male, SOUTH AFRICA: Natal , Howick, Karkloof Forest, 19.xi.1963, E. Hasselbarth ( ZSM) .- Paratypes: 8 males, same data as holotype .

Diagnostic characters: The long, fusiform darkly sclerotized anal point separate the male imago from all other Pseudosmittia .

Etymology: From the Latin fusis, spindle, and the suffix - atus, equipped with, referring to the fusiform anal point. Male imago (n = 8–9, except when otherwise stated)Total length 1.56–1.78, 1.64 mm. Wing length 0.90–1.02, 0.97 mm. Total length/wing length 1.53–1.85, 1.68 (7). Wing length/length of profemur 2.89–3.25, 3.11 (7). Coloration brownish black.

Head ( Fig. 87 B View FIGURE 87 ). AR 0.37–0.49, 0.37 (6). Terminal flagellomere 1.55–1.89, 1.72 µm (6) long. Temporal setae 4–5, 4 (7), consisting of 2–3, 2 (7) inner verticals, and 2 outer verticals. Clypeus with 6–8, 6 (6) setae. Tentorium 94–103, 98 µm long, 17–21, 18 µm wide. Cibarial pump and stipes as in Fig. 87 D View FIGURE 87 . Stipes 69–78 µm (3) long, 18–27 µm (3) wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 15–21, 16 (6); 21–25, 23 (6); 37–53, 43; 41–53, 48; 55–64, 59. Third palpomere ( Fig. 87 C View FIGURE 87 ) with 2 (6) elongated scalpellate sensilla clavata.

Thorax. Antepronotal lobes reduced medially, antepronotum with 1 (7) lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 6–9, 8; acrostichals 2; prealars 2–3, 3; no supraalar seta. Scutellum with 4 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 87 E View FIGURE 87 ). VR 1.29–1.40, 1.34 (6). Anal lobe reduced. Costal extension 32–50, 40 µm long. R 4+5 ending well proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate. Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 25–30, 27 µm (7) long, spurs of middle tibia 14–18, 16 µm (6) and 11–15, 12 µm (5) long, of hind tibia 30–39, 34 µm and 14–17, 15 µm (6) long. Width at apex of front tibia 19–22, 21 µm (7), of middle tibia 17–23, 21 µm, of hind tibia 25–32, 29 µm. Comb of 10–13, 11 setae, shortest setae 16–23, 18 µm long, longest setae 25–32, 29 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 61.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 87 F View FIGURE 87 ). Anal point 71–87, 80 µm long, fusiform and darkly sclerotized, with microtrichia except at extreme apex; tergite IX without setae; laterosternite IX with 3–4, 3 setae. Phallapodeme 53–73, 59 µm long; transverse sternapodeme 30–46, 38 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 87 G View FIGURE 87 ) 23–34, 30 µm (6) long. Gonocoxite 121–133, 126 µm long; superior volsella small, reaching to 0.40–0.49, 0.45 gonocoxite length; inferior volsella and accessory lobe well developed, both reaching to 0.83–0.87, 0.85 gonocoxite length. Gonostylus 46–48, 47 µm long, with apical crista dorsalis; megaseta 7–8, 7 µm long. HR 2.57–2.83, 2.70; HV 3.24–3.87, 3.50.

Distribution

The species is only known from the type locality in South Africa .
