On Psalidognathus boucardi Thomson, 1874 View in CoL

Psalidognathus Boucardi Thomson, 1874: 427 View in CoL .

Thomson (1874) described P. boucardi View in CoL based at least on one male and one female from Panama, and reported (translated): “This species is near to P. Friendii Gray View in CoL , and Sallei Thomson View in CoL , from which it is distinguished at first glance (male), by the elytra shiny and fairly strongly granulate basally, then become uniform, opaque, very weakly granulate, and the female by the elytra almost smooth posteriorly.” Later, Thomson (1877a) reported that this species is close to P. superbus View in CoL , differing by the very different color, elytra opaque from anterior third, granulation on basal third of the elytra less strong and less punctiform, and the granulation of the posterior 2/3 of the elytra much finer; and it differs from P. friendii View in CoL and P. sallei View in CoL as follows: head of the male larger, and with lateral tubercles stronger; frons [vertex] obsoletely armed, with longitudinal carinae [sic; sulcus] deeper; antenna more strongly spinose, with articles 1–2 excavated dorsally only at apex [?]; jugular projection much larger; scutellum subtriangular; ventral surface of the body stronger punctate; female wider, with the elytra almost smooth toward apex.” In fact, none of these characters allows separating the three species, especially the color. Again, it is very questionable the concept of P. friendii sensu Thomson. Furthermore View in CoL , the lectotype male of P. boucardi View in CoL is almost absolutely identical to his P. incas View in CoL and P. limenius View in CoL , being impossible to find a reliable feature allowing separating them.

The designation of lectotype by Quentin & Villiers (1983) has no nomenclatural value because two lectotypes were designated at the same time.
