Type: Venezia, Italy

Philippine record of distribution: Ilocos [Norte].

Note: Zeneveld (1956, 1959) also applied the name Po. atropurpurea to all the edible foliose Bangiales referable to Hawaiian limu, without any taxonomic treatment. The absence of traceable material for the Philippine Po. atropurpurea that might be used to resolve its nomenclatural stability will hamper any attempt on the species’ future taxonomic clarification.

Note: On the basis of overlapping morphologies, Ogawa (2001) raised the possibility that Po. marcosii is conspecific with Py. vietnamensis . It is of special interest to investigate based on type materials and recently collected specimens from the type locality of Po. marcosii . The name is considered unverified as the holotype material needs to be confirmed using a DNA sequencing approach as well as morphological re-investigation to resolve its phylogenetic placement.
