Type material. Holotype: male, BRAZIL: São Paulo State, Campos do Jordão Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, Córrego Galharada, 22°41’39”S 45°27’36”W, Light trap, 05.v.2008, leg.: Calor, A., Lecci, L. & Moretto, R.A. ( MZUSP). Paratype: 1 male, São Paulo State, Campos do Jordão, Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, Córrego Serrote, 22°39’30”S 45°26’32”W, Light trap, 20.xi.2007, leg.: Spies, M. R. ( MZUSP).
Etymology. The name refers to the native ethnic group Puri , who used to live in Mantiqueira Mountains, type locality of the species. It is to be treated as a noun in apposition.
Diagnostic characters. The species can be separated from other Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) species by having about ten macrotrichia on wing membrane, only in cells m1+2 and m3+4. The combination of narrow anal point, foretibial scale without spur, low antennal ratio, cubital and anal veins bare will also help on recognizing this species.
Description. Male (n = 1–2). Total length 2.12–2.60 mm. Wing length 1.61–1.64 mm. Total length / wing length 1.3–1.6. Wing length / length of profemur 2.3–2.5.
Coloration. Head light brown. Thorax dark brown; halteres light brown; wing without macula. Legs light brown. Abdominal segments brown.
Head. Eyes bare, frontal tubercles absent. AR 0.38–0.41; ultimate flagellomere 137–178 Μm long. Temporal setae 8. Clypeus with 18–25 setae. Tentorium 116 Μm long, 15 Μm wide. Palpomere lengths (in Μm): 26, 51, 95, 116, 198. Third palpal segment with 3 sensilla clavata, longest 19 Μm.
Wing ( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 A). VR 1.23–1.25. Brachiolum with 2 setae. R with 22–25 setae; R1 with 15–17 setae; R4+5 with 35–39 setae; M with 7–8; M1+2 with 28–30 setae. Cells m1+2 with 5–8 and m3+4 with 3–4 macrotrichia, remaining cells bare. Squama with 5–6 setae. Anal lobe weak.
Thorax. Scutum without tubercle. Dorsocentrals 15; acrostichals 17; prealars 3–4. Scutellum with 6–8 setae.
Legs. Scale of foretibia 21–25 Μm long, rounded and without spur. Spur of midtibia 57–58 µm long, including 21–26 µm long comb. Spur of hind tibia 60–64 µm long, including 30–32 µm long comb. Width at apex of foretibia 33–40 µm, of midtibia 34–41 µm, of hind tibia 36–40 µm. Lengths (in Μm) and proportions of legs as in Table 1 View TABLE 1 .
Hypopygium ( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 B–C). Tergite IX with 8 median setae. Anal tergite band well developed. Laterosternite with 4 setae. Anal point 40–46 Μm long, slender. Phallapodeme 45 Μm long, transverse sternapodeme 41–43 Μm long. Gonocoxite 75–115 Μm long. Total length of superior volsella including apical projection 44–76 Μm long, lateral seta 22 Μm long; apical projection 21 Μm long; basal part of superior volsella coverd with microtrichia, with 7 inner setae. Inferior volsella slender 66–85 Μm long, with 1 strong apical seta projecting caudad, and 7–8 orally directed setae. Gonostylus 101–125 Μm long. HR 0.74–0.93; HV 2.08–2.10.
Female and immatures. Unknown.
Remarks. P. (Pe.) puri sp. n. is the third Pentapedilum species recorded in Neotropical region and it has a distinct distribution pattern of macrotrichia on wing membrane, i. e., about ten macrotrichia are found only in cells m1+2 and m3+4, instead of numerous macrotrichia distributed in at least three cells. The new species are from the same type locality of P. camposense – Campos do Jordão State Park, in Mantiqueira Mountains from Southeastern Brazil.
Distribution. The species is known from São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil.
