Description. Adult. Colouration. Dirty yellowish, with hardly any dark pattern except for black frons and brown coronal suture, margins of vertex and bases of pro- and mesotibiae. Antennal segment 3 ochreous with dark apex, segments 4–6 ochreous basally, almost black apically. Thoracic dorsum with indistinct slightly darker pattern consisting of longitudinal bands; margins of sclerites brown. Membranes slightly lighter than sclerites.
Structure. Antenna 3.8–4.4 times as long as head width. Clypeus, in ventral view, indented anteriorly. Rostrum moderately long, 0.5–0.6 times as long as head width, segment 3 0.9–1.1 times as long as segment 2. Forewing ( Fig. 184 View FIGURES 175–184 ) 2.8–2.9 times as long as head width, 2.7–2.8 times as long as wide; cell cu 1 0.6 times higher than wide; surface spinules in cell r 2 above bifurcation of M sparsely spaced, forming irregular transverse rows or irregular rhombs. Metatibia 0.8–1.0 times as long as head width. Terminalia as in Figs 185, 193 View FIGURES 185–196 , 218–220 View FIGURES 197–220 . Male proctiger 0.4–0.5 times as long as head width. Paramere, in profile, lamellar, irregularly narrowing to apex; outer face with long, evenly spaced hairs; apex strongly sclerotised forming a pointed, inward directed tooth; inner face with scattered long setae. Distal portion of aedeagus weakly inflated in apical third; apical dilatation sickle-shaped, relatively slender. Female proctiger 0.7–0.8 times as long as head width, dorsal outline almost straight with inconspicuous bump in the middle, apical process very weakly inflated; circumanal ring 0.3–0.4 times as long as proctiger. Female subgenital plate 0.7 times as long as proctiger, ventral outline, in profile, almost straight at base, convex otherwise; apex forming small point.
Measurements (in mm) and ratios (2 ♂, 2 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.82–0.88, ♀ 0.88–0.90; antenna length ♂ 3.10– 3.78, ♀ 3.74–3.84; forewing length ♂ 2.30–2.50, ♀ 2.50–2.64; male proctiger length 0.32–0.40; paramere length 0.20–0.22; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.28–0.32; female proctiger length 0.60–0.72.
Fifth instar immature. Colouration. Sclerites light brown, membranes yellow. Antennal flagellum, tibiae, tarsi, margins of wing pads and the fore margin of caudal plate dark brown.
Structure. Body 1.4–1.7 times as long as wide. Apical labial segment 0.5–0.6 times and antenna 3.1–4.0 times as long as forewing pad, respectively. Caudal plate 1.6–1.7 times as wide as long and 3.1–3.4 times as wide as circumanal ring; with two long dorsal submedian capitate setae near dorsal sectasetae, longer than the latter.
Measurements (in mm) and ratios (4 immature). Body length 1.58–2.18, antenna length 1.50–1.98; forewing pad length 0.44–0.56; caudal plate width 0.62–0.74.
Etymology. Adjective, feminine form. From Latin scalpratus = fitted with a scraper, for the shape of the dis- tal segment of the aedeagus resembling a scraper used by the ancient Romans for scraping bones or sharpening styles.
Distribution. Brazil (CE, GO, MG).
Host plant, biology and habitat. Hymenaea courbaril L., H. martiana Hayne , H. stigonocarpa Hayne. —The immatures are free-living.
Comments. Platycorypha scalprata differs from other psyllids associated with Hymenaea as indicated in the key. It is most similar to P. atrifrons in the paramere which is narrowed in apical half and has an inward directed apical tooth, and in the aedeagus which lacks ventral lobes but differs in the very slender apex of the distal portion.
