Material examined. Holotype ♂, Brazil: BA, Luiz Eduardo Magalhães , -12.0604 -45.3753, 740 m, 25.ix.2012 (D.L. Queiroz) #348 ( UFPR, dry mounted). GoogleMaps
Paratypes. Brazil: BA: 1 ♂, 8 ♀, same data as holotype but ( NHMB, UFPR, dry and slide mounted, 70% etha- nol); 4 ♂, 4 ♀, same but -11.9877 -45.1728, 740 m, 25.ix.2012 (D.L. Queiroz) #356 ( NHMB, slide mounted, 70% ethanol) GoogleMaps .
Description. Adult. Colouration. Yellow or orange. Coronal suture and a longitudinal submedian stripe on either side of the former, as well as dorsal margin of antennal insertion dark. Antennal segments 4–7 or 4–8 brown basally, almost black apically. Thoracic dorsum with brown pattern consisting of spots and longitudinal lines. Younger specimens with less extended dark colour.
Structure. Antenna 3.6–3.7 times as long as head width. Clypeus, in ventral view, rounded or almost straight anteriorly. Rostrum very long, 0.7 times as long as head width, segment 3 1.6–1.7 times as long as segment 2. Forewing ( Fig. 178 View FIGURES 175–184 ) 2.8–3.0 times as long as head width, 2.8–3.0 times as long as wide; cell cu 1 0.7 times higher than wide; surface spinules in cell r 2 above bifurcation of M sparsely, regularly spaced. Metatibia 0.9–1.0 times as long as head width. Terminalia as in Figs 187 View FIGURES 185–196 , 200–202 View FIGURES 197–220 . Male proctiger 0.5 times as long as head width. Paramere, in profile, lamellar, weakly curved, irregularly narrowing to apex; outer face with long, evenly spaced hairs; apex strongly sclerotised, forming an inward directed ridge; inner face with long setae which are thicker along fore margin in apical quarter. Distal portion of aedeagus inflated in apical third; apex hook-shaped. Female proctiger 0.8 times as long as head width, dorsal outline almost straight, apical process not inflated; circumanal ring 0.3 times as long as proctiger. Female subgenital plate 0.7 times as long as proctiger, ventral outline, in profile, relatively evenly curved; apex forming large point.
Measurements (in mm) and ratios (1 ♂, 1 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.78, ♀ 0.86; antenna length ♂ 2.84, ♀ 3.16; fore- wing length ♂ 2.22, ♀ 2.54; male proctiger length 0.36; paramere length 0.20; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.26; female proctiger length 0.68.
Fifth instar immature unknown.
Etymology. Noun in apposition. From Latin ater = black and frons = forehead, brow, for the conspicuously black frons.
Distribution. Brazil (BA).
Host plant, biology and habitat unknown.
Comments. Platycorypha atrifrons differs from other species of the Platycorypha atrifrons -group as indicated in the key. It resembles P. scalprata in the paramere which is irregularly narrowing towards apex, has an inward directed apical sclerotised tooth and is moderately densely covered in long setae on the inner face. It differs in the shorter and more curved apex of the aedeagus. It is so far the only member of the species group known from the Brazilian state of Bahia.
