Type:—[ CAPE VERDE.] In Monte Verede , ins. S. Vicentii, ultra alt. 1000 ped., s.d., Vogel 51 (lectotype: FI barcode FI012361 [digital image!], designated here; isolectotype: K barcode K000274285 !) .

= Phagnalon melanoleucum Webb View in CoL in Hooker (1849: 135)
Notes:—The locality indicated in the original description is on Saint Vincent island: “HAB. In Monte Verede, ins. S. Vicentii, ultra alt. 1000 ped. (Vogel, n. 51. Junio 1841, spec. fructifera et quodam florida)”. However, a detailed study of a representative number of herbarium specimens from several localities on the different islands shows that there are no morphological discontinuities between Ph. luridum View in CoL and Ph. melanolecum . Therefore, we conclude that this variability reflects phenotypic plasticity and does not merit taxonomic recognition.
