Material examined. None from Panama. Extra-limital material. Colombia [Pacific]: 1 male, cl 5.7, cw 5.9, CRBM- UV-cr:2019-103, Los Negritos off Bahía Málaga, 03°53’47.6”N, 77°24’09.3”W, rocky offshore outcrops, piles of large granitic boulders, some cemented with sponges, under rock on coarse sand, depth 0–1 m, leg. A. Anker, 27.04.2009 (fcn COL-258); 1 ovigerous female, cl 5.6, cw 6.1, CRBM-UV-cr:2019-102, same collection details as for previous specimen (fcn COL-262) GoogleMaps .
Previous records from Panama. Nobili (1901, as P. sinuimanus ); Haig (1960, 1968); Gore (1982); García- Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez (2009).
Distribution. East Pacific: Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama (Coiba Is., Bahía Honda in Veraguas, Otoque I., Taboga Is., Amador Causeway near Ciudad de Panamá, Punta Guayabo Chiquito in Darién), Colombia and Ecuador ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982; Hendrickx 1993; García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009).
Ecology. Intertidal and subtidal, presently known depth range: 0–24 m, exceptionally down to 64 m; typically on mud or muddy sand under rocks, occasionally in coral rocks and living corals ( Pocillopora ) ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982; García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009).
Remarks. We tentatively follow Hendrickx (1993), who synonymised the two subspecies of P. lewisi proposed by Haig (1960), based on some differences in the armature of the P1 carpus, viz. P. lewisi lewisi or “northern form” ( Mexico) and P. lewisi austrinus or “southern form” ( Nicaragua to Ecuador, but with some records from the Gulf of California). The sympatric occurrence of both subspecies in the Gulf of California is at least suspicious, although Hendrickx (1993) found the differentianting character used by Haig (1960) not valid. Nevertheless, we feel that a combined morphological-molecular study of P. lewisi is needed to make a final conclusion on this issue. In life, P. lewisi can be relatively easily recognised by the orange-brown carapace and much darker P1, as exemplified by the illustrated specimen from Colombia ( Fig. 61 View FIGURE 61 ).
