Protologue citation:—“In HIMALAYA orientali:–Jongri; Pey-kiong-la (bis), Kingii View in CoL mercenar.! ”.

Type:— INDIA. Sikkim: Jongri (Dzongri), Pey-kiong-la, 13,000 ft., Sept. 1888, King’s collector s.n. (lectotype CAL0000018986 !, second-step, designated here, first-step designated by Husain & Garg 2005: 94) ; isolectotype CAL0000018985!

Syntypes:— INDIA. Sikkim: Jongri (Dzongri), Pey-kiong-la, Aug. 1887, King’s collector s.n. ( CAL 0000019053!, CAL0000019054!, DD!).

Notes:— Prain (1890) described Pedicularis roylei subvar. speciosa based on the gatherings of King’s collectors from Dzongri, Sikkim, India. Husain & Garg (2005: 94) designated the collection of September 1888 from Pey-kiong-la, Jongri, Sikkim, India by King’s collector at CAL as the lectotype, however they did not specify which particular herbarium specimen in CAL is the lectotype because at present two herbarium sheets from Pey-kiong-la, Jongri, Sikkim, India by King’s collector exit at CAL ( CAL 0000018985 and CAL 0000018986). Therefore, from these ones, the better preserved specimen CAL0000018986, is selected here as the second-step lectotype for the name P. roylei subvar. speciosa Prain.
